Spc. Blane McTaggart was a 15 year veteran of the Military, former Alliance Drill Instructor on with the 9th Guardians of Osiris. He moved to the outer planet Newhall and got married but his wife was killed by a Reaver Raiding party (one of the first appearances of the Reavers). He joined the Independence Army as a close quarters combat instructor and a knife fighter. He is an afficionado of the place known as "Scotland" on the Earth That Was.
Spc. Theo Buchanan was a successful business owner until the war. He owned a series of 'virtual eateries' on the various skyplexes in orbit around the many outer planets. When the Alliance Tax Collectors seized half of his company assets and destroyed his business, Buchanan joined the ranks of the Browncoat Army. He is a very 'motivated' fighter against the Alliance and often hurls insults at them.
Sergeant Maura Santee was a career NCO with the Alliance military until she retired early when she was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Fortunately for her, modern treatments pushed the illness into remission, but the start of the war found her compelled to leave her cottage on planet Whittier and join the Army of the Independents. She is no nonsense and very experienced. She knows well when the tide of battle is turning.
A field medic for Bravo Company, Elena Niska hails from planet Sihnon, raised by an aunt to escape the influence of her family's underworld dealings. Ashamed of her Great Uncle's criminal empire, she enlists in the Independence Army. Originally a conscientious objector, she initially refused to carry a firearm, but the brutality of the war turns her into an accomplished fighter.
Corporal Randall Tully was a member of the Diplomatic Corps of Persephone when the war broke out. Heeding the call to arms, Tully returned to his home planet of Whitefall to join the cause. During his transfer to the 76th Combat Brigade, he met Elena Niska. Noting that others had shunned Elena because of her family background, Tully became protective of her, not that she needed protecting.
Private Shawna Zander was the 6th daughter of a wealthy industrialist. Coming from an upper class family she sought to enhance her education by taking semesters on the outer planets, against the wishes of her parents. There she met the farmer's son, Merrill Cedar, and soon fell in love and joined him in the Independence Army. They were married at Soller's Hope when their Brigade was stationed there in early 2511.
Corporal Taylor Acrey was an administrator on Planet Beaumonde when she enlisted with the Army of Independence. A student of political history, she was struck by the parallels of the Cause of the Browncoats and General George Washington's Continental Army back on the 'Earth that was.' Her fervent hope is that her comrades enjoy the same victory as Washington's troops.
Anna Cedar is a recently widowed young woman who has been searching for her brother, Merrill, for the greater part of a year. After the death of her husband, Wilford, she travels with the many refugees from the planet Bernadette. When her ship crashed on planet Hera, she organizes the groups of refugees and tries to keep them alive, always on the run from Alliance snipers and air attacks.
Private Merrill Cedar was an unassuming farmer on Planet Shadow when the call to arms came on the eve of War with the Alliance of Central Planets. The Cedar family farm was destroyed in the first month of the war due to Alliance bombardments. Cedar enlisted in the 10th Volunteers of the 27th Combat Brigade. When they were nearly wiped out, the remnants were merged into the 5th Battalion of the 76th Combat Brigade on Hera. Merrill has one surviving sister, Anna.
Paul A. Davies
Sergeant Paul A. Davies was a military instructor with the Alliance academy for most of his adult life when he decided in 2501 to retire on his original home planet of Boros. When the outer planets broke away in 2506, Davies enlisted with the Independence fighters, retaining the rank he had when he was active service with the Alliance. Davies was previously married but never remarried and liked collecting antique books and wrote a number of survival guides for life on the rim.
Spc. Everett Tang was a civilian demolitions expert when his construction company was closed and absorbed by the Blue Sun Corporation in 2504. Out of work, he enlisted with the Browncoats in the uprising of 2505 and was assigned to the 76th Independent Combat Brigade utilizing his experience with Explosives Ordnance and Demolitions. Before he could get a field promotion his combat engineering unit was merged into the 5th Battalion when their numbers were decimated in the first battles of Hera.
Maggie Cahill was a wealthy heiress who raised horses on Planet Shadow. She was a generous philanthropist, often helping needy people on the outer planets. During the battles on Shadow, her ranch estate was destroyed and she left with just the clothes on her back, joining a series of refugee columns. After fleeing to Hera, Alliance air attacks decimated her refugee camp, she took charge and led a column of refugees away from the fighting to await rescue.
